Pruning Roses. We said in last month's newsletter that choosing the right time to prune Arizona roses is difficult. Ideally, they should be pruned two weeks before the buds swell.

Some gardeners simply"sense" when this is about to happen. (One St. David gardener judges it by when the mesquite trees begin to bud.). Sep 21, Prune adult, hybrid ever-blooming roses between January and February.

Make all of your pruning cuts at a degree angle. Pruned canes should be cut roughly 1/4 inch above the nearest outward-facing bud at an angle that slants away from the bud. Don't be afraid to prune hard.

Ever-blooming roses, as a general rule, are pruned back hard in early spring. In the summer, prune rose bushes to remove dead or diseased branches. Make the cuts one inch below the diseased branch, so only healthy wood remains. Summer is also the time to look for any branches in the center of the bush that are growing across each other. Prune away the weaker of the branches that cross each other. Sep 21, Trim your roses between mid December and mid January, which is the ideal time if you live in Arizona.

If you have shrub roses, floribunda’s, hybrid teas, or grandiflora roses, trim them back to knee height. Do a light trim after September Trim off only approximately ¼ of the rose bush. Arizona roses are also particularly prone to drought stress and even more so after they are pruned. Keep your roses healthy by giving them extra attention after you prune.

Prune all dead or diseased canes.

Feb 13, WHEN TO PRUNE ROSES. The best time to prune roses is in late winter or early spring, around the time new growth begins.

This could be as early as January or as late as May, depending on your climate. If you'd like to mark your calendar, or set yourself a pruning reminder, here are regional estimates: Zones 3 and 4 - May; Zones 5, 6 and 7 - March or April.
